Key Terms
Simul — Latin for "at the same time / all at once." The Fourth Lateran Council's word for the instantaneous creation of both spiritual and material creatures.
The Three Instances — Thomas Aquinas's analysis of the three conceptual "moments" of angelic creation: (1) creation with infused knowledge, (2) the free choice of will, (3) confirmation in grace for the faithful.
The Beatific Vision — Direct, unmediated sight of God's essence; the eternal reward given to the faithful angels at the moment of their confirmation, and the destiny promised to the redeemed human soul.
The Angel of the Lord (malakh YHWH) — A special figure in the Old Testament who speaks with divine authority and accepts worship; many Fathers identified these appearances as Christophanies — pre-incarnate manifestations of the Son of God.
