Part VII — Living in Victory
15 min read
The Bible does not end with Satan in power. It ends with his complete and eternal defeat. From the first promise in Eden — "it shall bruise thy head" Genesis 3:15 — to the final scene in Revelation, Scripture moves toward the triumph of Christ over every power of darkness.
Revelation 20 describes the Millennium — a thousand-year reign of Christ on earth during which Satan is bound and cast into the bottomless pit:
Revelation 20:2-3 — "And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more."
During this time, the earth will experience unprecedented peace, justice, and prosperity. The curse will be partially lifted, and the nations will worship the Lord.
At the end of the Millennium, Satan is released for a brief season. He deceives the nations one final time, gathering them for battle against the camp of the saints. But fire comes down from God out of heaven and devours them. Satan is cast into the lake of fire, where the beast and the false prophet already are:
Revelation 20:10 — "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
This is the final end of evil. Not rehabilitation, not reconciliation, not annihilation — but eternal, conscious punishment for the one who introduced sin and death into God's good creation.
After Satan's final defeat, God creates a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness dwells:
Revelation 21:4 — "And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away."
The curse is reversed. Death is destroyed. Evil is extinguished. And the people of God live forever in the presence of the Lamb who overcame.
