Lesson 15 — The Strongmen of the Body and the End: Deaf & Dumb, Infirmity, and the Spirit of the Antichrist

The disciples had failed. The father had brought his son to them and they could not cast out the spirit. The boy had been this way since childhood — thrown into fire, thrown into water, unable to speak, subject to seizures. When Jesus arrived, the spirit convulsed the boy and threw him to the ground foaming at the mouth.

Mark 9:25: "When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him."

Jesus named it. Deaf and dumb. Not a disease. A spirit with a specific assignment against the body's sensory and communicative functions. When it left, the boy was so still that many thought he was dead. Then he rose.

Mark 9:29: "This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting."

The Deaf and Dumb Spirit

The Deaf and Dumb Spirit (pneuma alalon) is a demonic strongman with a specific assignment: to block spiritual reception and spiritual communication simultaneously. In its physical manifestation, it produces muteness, deafness, and in some cases seizure disorders that have a demonic rather than merely neurological origin.

In its spiritual manifestation — which is its broader operation in the contemporary church — it produces the condition Jesus described in Matthew 13:13: "because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand." A corporate Deaf and Dumb Spirit over a congregation produces an inability to receive prophetic word, an inability to speak truth, and an absence of genuine worship.

Jesus' instruction — prayer and fasting — specifically addresses this strongman. Fasting weakens the flesh's dominance and creates the spiritual sensitivity required to address a spirit of this depth. This is why prolonged deliverance work is often preceded by fasting.

The Spirit of Infirmity

Luke 13:11-12: "And, behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity."

Luke 13:16: "And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?"

Jesus described her condition as a bond — specifically named as Satan's work, specifically named as infirmity. The Spirit of Infirmity is the demonic principality behind illness that has a spiritual root — chronic conditions resistant to treatment, recurring illness in specific family lines, physical afflictions that correlate with periods of spiritual compromise or specific generational patterns.

Not all illness is demonic. Scripture is clear that suffering can be redemptive, that the thorn in Paul's flesh was not removed, that Job's affliction was permitted for a purpose. The discernment required is whether a specific illness has a spiritual root and whether the Spirit of Infirmity has legal ground. When it does, medical treatment addresses the physical symptom while the spiritual root remains unaddressed — which is why some conditions remain treatment-resistant.

The Spirit of the Antichrist

1 John 4:3: "Every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."

2 John 1:7: "For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh."

The Spirit of the Antichrist is the principality that opposes the specific confession: Jesus Christ — God in the flesh — crucified for sin, raised bodily, returning in judgment. This spirit is not limited to the future Antichrist figure of Revelation. It is operating now, in every system that denies the incarnation, the atonement, and the bodily resurrection.

The Spirit of the Antichrist is the governing spirit of false religion — not merely secular atheism, but the sophisticated theological frameworks that affirm a Christ who is not God incarnate, a salvation that is not through the cross, a resurrection that is not bodily and historical. Every prosperity gospel that replaces the cross with blessing, every progressive Christianity that replaces the risen Christ with a therapeutic ideal, every ecumenical framework that dissolves the exclusivity of John 14:6 is operating under the Spirit of the Antichrist.

What This Means for You Right Now

The three strongmen in this lesson operate at the body, in health, and through theology. The response to each is the same authority that addressed them in Scripture:

The name of Jesus Christ — specifically and deliberately applied to the specific strongman — carries the authority that Mark 9 demonstrated. That authority was given to every believer: Luke 10:19: "Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."

You have the authority. The strongmen are named. The legal ground can be revoked. The final quiz for Part VI follows — and Part VII applies everything examined in these six lessons directly to the specific doorways through which strongmen gain access in contemporary life.

The strongmen are identified. Part VII examines every specific door through which they enter — and how to close each one permanently.
