Why the Son Is the Father’s Final Word

God has spoken. He spoke creation into existence. He spoke to Adam in the garden. He spoke to Noah, Abraham, Moses, and the prophets. But in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son Hebrews 1:2. The Son is the Father’s final, full, and personal word.

This is one of the most important claims in the New Testament. It is not saying that the Father stopped speaking after Jesus. It is saying that Jesus is the climax of the Father’s speech. Every earlier word was true, but partial. Every prophet was a finger pointing forward. Every sacrifice was a shadow of the reality to come. Every law was a tutor leading to the Teacher.

Jesus is different. He is not another messenger. He is the Message in person. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” John 1:14. The eternal Son, who was with the Father and was Himself God, stepped into time and space. He did not come to deliver a lecture about the Father. He came to be the Father’s self-disclosure.

The author of Hebrews makes the contrast explicit. In the past, God spoke through the prophets “at many times and in various ways.” Now He has spoken by His Son, “whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe” Hebrews 1:1-2. The Son is not merely a superior prophet. He is the agent of creation, the radiance of the Father’s glory, the exact representation of His being.

This means that if you want to hear the Father, listen to Jesus. Jesus’ words are the Father’s words. “The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work” John 14:10. Jesus’ works are the Father’s works. “The Father who dwells in me does his works” John 14:10. Jesus’ judgments are the Father’s judgments. “I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me” John 5:30.

The Son is the Father’s final word because the Son is the Father’s own self. To reject Jesus is to reject the Father’s speech. To receive Jesus is to receive the Father. “Whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me” Mark 9:37.

This has profound implications for how we read the Bible. The Old Testament is not a separate religion from the New Testament. It is the Father’s preparation. The New Testament is not a replacement. It is the Father’s fulfillment. Jesus is the key that unlocks every page. The Father who commanded Israel, sent the prophets, and shaped history is the same Father who sent His Son.

Memory Verse: Hebrews 1:1-2 — In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.

Action Step: Read the Sermon on the Mount as the Father’s instruction given through the Son. Note three commands that reveal the Father’s values.

Exercise: Choose one Old Testament passage and explain how Jesus fulfills or clarifies what the Father was doing in that passage.
