The Spirit’s work is not to draw attention to Himself. It is to reveal the Son, and through the Son, the Father. Jesus promised that when the Spirit of truth comes, “he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you” John 16:13-14.
This is the Spirit’s economy. The Father sends the Spirit in the name of the Son. The Spirit takes what belongs to the Son — which is also what belongs to the Father — and discloses it to believers. The Spirit is the bond of love between the Father and the Son, and He brings believers into that same triune fellowship.
How does the Spirit reveal the Father?
First, the Spirit convicts. He shows the world its sin, righteousness, and judgment John 16:8. Specifically, He convicts concerning sin because people do not believe in Jesus. The first revelation of the Father is that we need the Father’s Son. The Spirit shatters the lie of self-sufficiency and prepares the heart for adoption.
Second, the Spirit regenerates. Jesus told Nicodemus that no one can enter the kingdom of God unless born of water and the Spirit John 3:5. The Spirit gives new life. This new life is life in relation to the Father. The Spirit makes us alive so that we can cry out to the Father.
Third, the Spirit indwells. “Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father’” Galatians 4:6. The Spirit does not merely give information about the Father. He creates the inner capacity to address the Father with intimacy. The Spirit is the one who turns doctrine into cry, theology into adoption.
Fourth, the Spirit teaches. The disciples could not bear everything Jesus wanted to tell them while He was with them. The Spirit would come and guide them into all truth. He would remind them of what Jesus said and open their understanding to its meaning. The same Spirit teaches believers today as they read the Scripture the Father inspired.
Fifth, the Spirit assures. “The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children” Romans 8:16. The Spirit whispers, confirms, and seals. He gives the inner witness that we belong to the Father. This assurance is not based on our performance. It is based on the Spirit’s testimony.
Without the Spirit, the Father would remain a doctrine. With the Spirit, the Father becomes our Father. The Spirit is the one who brings us home.
