In the ancient world, a seal was a mark of ownership and protection. Kings sealed documents to authenticate them. Owners sealed goods to identify them. A sealed item belonged to someone and was protected by their authority.
The Father has sealed His children. “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession — to the praise of his glory” Ephesians 1:13-14.
This seal has three meanings.
First, the seal is a mark of ownership. The Spirit shows that you belong to the Father. You are not your own. You were bought with a price. The seal is the Father’s brand upon your life.
Second, the seal is a guarantee of completion. The Spirit is the down payment, the first installment of what the Father will fully give. If the down payment is the Spirit Himself, how great must the final inheritance be? The seal guarantees that the Father will finish what He started.
Third, the seal is a pledge of protection. A sealed document or item was protected by the authority of the one who sealed it. The Father’s seal means that no one can snatch you out of His hand. You are secure in Christ.
This security is not based on your performance. It is based on the Father’s seal. You may sin. You may doubt. You may struggle. But the seal remains. The Father does not unseal what He has sealed.
The seal also means you are set apart for a purpose. Sealed items were not meant for common use. They were consecrated. You are consecrated to the Father. Your life is for His glory.
Live as a sealed person. Do not live as if your salvation were uncertain. Do not live as if you were still a slave on the market. You belong to the Father. The Spirit is your seal. Your future is guaranteed.
Memory Verse: Ephesians 1:13-14 — When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance.
Action Step: Write a list of things you fear might separate you from the Father. Read Romans 8:35-39 over each fear. Declare the seal of the Spirit.
Exercise: Explain in your own words how the Spirit is both seal and guarantee. What does each term add to your assurance?
