Hell on Earth: Demonic Oppression, Addiction, and Present Bondage

The New Testament places enormous emphasis on the renewal of the mind. Romans 12:2 commands believers not to be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewal of the mind. Ephesians 4:23 speaks of being renewed in the spirit of our minds. The mind is where temptation begins, where lies take root, and where holiness either grows or dies.
Many of the battles we call spiritual warfare are actually battles for the mind. The enemy whispers lies about God, about ourselves, and about sin. If we believe the lies, we act on them. If we replace them with truth, we walk in freedom.
Common lies include: God is disappointed with me and will not forgive me again. My sin is too great to be healed. I am defined by my past. I can manage this secret sin on my own. I do not need the church. These lies gain power when they are repeated and unexamined.
The truth that counters each lie is found in Scripture. God is faithful and just to forgive 1 John 1:9. No sin is beyond the blood of Christ. The believer is a new creation 2 Corinthians 5:17. Secret sin grows in darkness; confession brings light. The Christian life is meant to be lived in community.
Renewing the mind is not automatic. It requires the disciplined intake of Scripture, prayer, worship, fellowship, and obedience. As we fill our minds with truth, the lies lose their grip. As we obey the truth, our desires are reordered. The renovation of the soul is a lifelong project.
This discipline also involves rejecting whatever feeds the old nature. Violent entertainment, pornography, gossip, bitterness, and occult media all shape the mind in destructive ways. The Christian must guard the gates of the mind as a city guards its walls.
The mind is renewed in community. We need others to speak truth to us when we cannot see it. We need accountability, encouragement, and correction. The church is the place where the truth is proclaimed, where the lies are exposed, and where the soul is renovated in love.
