Hell on Earth: Demonic Oppression, Addiction, and Present Bondage
30 min read
Scripture consistently forbids occult practices. Deuteronomy 18 lists divination, fortune-telling, interpreting omens, sorcery, and consulting the dead as abominations. Galatians 5:20 lists sorcery (pharmakeia) as a work of the flesh. Revelation warns that sorcerers will have their part in the lake of fire. The Bible takes the occult seriously because it opens people to deception and demonic influence.
Occult involvement is not limited to obvious practices like witchcraft. It includes astrology, tarot cards, Ouija boards, spirit guides, energy healing tied to non-Christian spirituality, and certain forms of meditation that empty the mind rather than fill it with Scripture. These practices may seem harmless, but they give the enemy a foothold.
When a person has been involved in the occult, whether actively or passively, renunciation is necessary. Renunciation means confessing the sin, rejecting the lie, breaking agreement with the demonic, and turning to Christ. It is not a magical formula. It is an act of repentance and faith.
Renunciation should be specific. A person might say, "I renounce my involvement with tarot cards and any spirit that claimed to speak through them. I turn from that practice and return to Christ alone." The specifics matter because vague renunciations are often ineffective in the heart and mind.
The Bible speaks of curses in two main ways. First, there is the curse of the law, which Christ bore for us Galatians 3:13. Every believer is delivered from that curse. Second, there are curses pronounced against wickedness and idolatry, often in the context of covenant disobedience. Believers in Christ are not under a curse; they are under grace.
Some deliverance ministries spend excessive time breaking generational curses. While the sins of the fathers can have real consequences for children, the believer in Christ is a new creation. The blood of Jesus breaks every curse that the law would bring. We should not live in fear of hidden curses. We should live in the freedom of the cross.
True deliverance from occult influence comes through repentance, faith, and the authority of Christ. The person must turn from the occult, destroy any objects associated with it, fill the mind with Scripture, and walk in obedience. Prayer with godly leaders can be helpful. But the foundation is always the gospel.
Common student mistake: Treating renunciation as a magical ritual that removes problems without requiring genuine repentance and ongoing obedience.
Practice assignment: Read Deuteronomy 18:9-14 and Acts 19:18-20. Write a plan for how a person involved in the occult could repent and find freedom in Christ.
Worksheet idea: "Occult Inventory" — list occult practices or objects in one's background and write a specific renunciation for each.
Completion requirement: Student can explain why occult involvement is dangerous, how to renounce it biblically, and why Christians need not fear curses.
