The Christian Response: Evangelism, Compassion, and Spiritual Warfare
30 min read
Behind every human objection to the gospel is a spiritual stronghold. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 that the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds, arguments, and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God. Evangelism is not only persuasion; it is spiritual warfare.
This does not mean that every unbeliever is demon-possessed. It means that the minds of unbelievers are blinded by the god of this world 2 Corinthians 4:4. It means that Satan deceives the nations. It means that principalities and powers oppose the spread of the gospel.
Prayer is the primary weapon in spiritual warfare. Jesus told His disciples to pray for laborers to be sent into the harvest Matthew 9:38. Paul asked the Ephesians to pray for him that he might proclaim the gospel with boldness Ephesians 6:19. When we pray for the lost, we are asking God to tear down strongholds, open blind eyes, and soften hard hearts.
Prayer should be specific. Name the people you are praying for. Ask God to convict them of sin, to reveal Christ to them, to remove obstacles, and to give them the gift of repentance.
Fasting intensifies prayer. It is not a way to manipulate God. It is a way to humble ourselves, focus our desires, and express our urgency. When Jesus' disciples could not cast out a demon, He told them that some demons come out only by prayer and fasting Mark 9:29. The church that fasts for the lost is showing that it believes the matter is serious.
Fasting should be combined with prayer and the Word. It should not become a legalistic performance. It should express dependence on God and desperation for His power.
Strongholds are broken as the truth of the gospel replaces the lies that hold people captive. Our task is to proclaim the truth, love the person, and pray without ceasing. We do not have the power to convert anyone. The Holy Spirit does. We are His instruments.
