Living in Light of Eternity
30 min read
The doctrine of hell makes time precious. Every moment is an opportunity to believe, to obey, to love, and to share the gospel. The psalmist prays, "Teach us to number our days, that we may get a heart of wisdom" Psalms 90:12. Wisdom is not merely knowledge. It is the skill of using our brief lives for eternal purposes.
Jesus told the parable of the rich fool who built bigger barns but died that night. He called him a fool because he stored up treasures for himself but was not rich toward God. The shortness of life is a reason to live urgently for the kingdom.
Everything we have is a trust from God. Our time, money, abilities, relationships, and opportunities belong to Him. A steward manages what belongs to another. The Christian steward asks how each resource can be used for God's glory and for the rescue of the lost.
This does not mean that every Christian must become poor or abandon normal life. It means that our possessions serve a higher purpose. We are not owners; we are managers. One day we will give an account.
Generosity is an expression of faith. When we give, we acknowledge that our treasure is in heaven. We loosen our grip on this world. We participate in the advance of the gospel. Jesus said that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also.
The early church gave generously so that the gospel could spread. Missionaries throughout history have sacrificed comfort so that others could hear the good news. Our giving is an investment in eternity.
A life lived in light of eternity is not frantic. It is focused. It spends time on what matters. It loves people more than things. It shares the gospel without shame. It stores up treasure in heaven. When death comes, such a life has no regrets.
