Module 1: The Spirit Who Is God
9 min read
The first and most important thing to know about the Holy Spirit is that He is God. Not a junior god. Not an angel. Not a divine vapor. He shares the same eternal, uncreated nature as the Father and the Son.
Scripture proves this in several ways.
The Spirit is called God. When Ananias lied to the apostles about the money he had kept back, Peter said he had lied to the Holy Spirit, then added, "You have not lied to human beings but to God" Acts 5:3-4. The Holy Spirit and God are identified as the same reality.
The Spirit does what only God can do. He is present everywhere Psalms 139:7. He knows the deep things of God 1 Corinthians 2:10-11. He gives life John 6:63Romans 8:11. He is the source of spiritual rebirth John 3:5-8. These are not the attributes of a creature or a force.
The Spirit receives divine worship. The great Trinitarian blessing at the end of 2 Corinthians 13:14 places the Holy Spirit alongside the Father and the Son as the source of grace, love, and fellowship. The Spirit is not an afterthought in Christian devotion. He is the One in whom we fellowship with God.
The Bible gives the Spirit many names, and each one teaches us something:
Each name is not a different spirit. They are different windows into the same divine Person. When you call on the Helper, you are calling on God. When you welcome the Spirit of Truth, you are welcoming God. When you rely on the Spirit of Life, you are relying on God.
This week, try saying this aloud each morning:
"I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who has spoken through the prophets, who makes me alive in Christ, and who will keep me until the day of resurrection."
It is old language, but it is true language. And truth, spoken regularly, becomes confidence.
