1.6 — Knowing the Spirit Personally

Knowing the Spirit Personally
Doctrine is meant to lead to devotion. It is not enough to know about the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised that the Spirit would be with us and in us John 14:17. That is a relational promise. This lesson moves from correct belief to lived experience.
The Spirit Wants to Be Known
Think about the most important relationships in your life. They grew through time, attention, honesty, and shared experience. The same is true of the Holy Spirit. He is not hiding from you. He is not playing a cosmic game of hide-and-seek. He wants to be acknowledged, trusted, and welcomed.
"If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Luke 11:13. God delights to give the Spirit. The first step is simply to ask — and keep asking.
Signs That You Are Growing in Relationship with the Spirit
You are growing in your relationship with the Holy Spirit when:
- You speak to Him directly and naturally.
- You notice His promptings and obey them promptly.
- You grieve when you grieve Him, and you quickly turn back.
- You depend on Him for strength you do not have on your own.
- You see Jesus more clearly because of His witness.
- You love others more freely because His love is being poured out in your heart.
- You become uncomfortable with sin that once seemed normal.
These signs are not about emotional intensity. A quiet, steady growth is often the deepest kind.
A Daily Welcome
Try beginning each day with a simple welcome. Here is one you can adapt:
"Good morning, Holy Spirit. Thank You for being with me and in me today. I surrender my plans, my worries, my words, and my work to You. Lead me into truth. Fill me with love. Empower me for whatever You have prepared. I want to live this day in friendship with You."
It does not need to be dramatic. It needs to be sincere. Over time, that daily address reshapes your identity. You begin to live as someone who is not alone.
The Promise
Jesus made a sweeping promise: "Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" Matthew 28:20. That promise is kept through the Spirit. Wherever you go today — your kitchen, your commute, your workplace, your hospital room — the Spirit is there. You can know Him. You can walk with Him. You can live in His presence.
This is the foundation of everything else in this course. We will talk about power, gifts, fruit, guidance, and mission. But none of those topics will make sense apart from this: the Holy Spirit is a Person, He is God, and He wants to walk with you.
