Module 2: The Spirit of the New Creation
11 min read
Pentecost is the birthday of the church, but it is far more than that. It is the moment when the new creation begins in earnest. The same Spirit who hovered over the waters at creation now hovers over a gathering of frightened disciples, and a new world is born.
Before Pentecost, Jesus told His disciples to wait in Jerusalem until they were "clothed with power from on high" Luke 24:49. They obeyed. For ten days they prayed, remembered Jesus' words, and chose leadership for the community. Waiting is not passive. It is active preparation for what God has promised.
If you are in a season of waiting, learn from the disciples. Keep praying. Keep obeying. Keep gathering. The Spirit comes to prepared hearts.
When the day of Pentecost came, the disciples were all together. Suddenly "a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house" Acts 2:2. Then "they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them" Acts 2:3. And "all of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them" Acts 2:4.
Wind, fire, and speech: three powerful symbols. Wind recalls the breath of life in Genesis. Fire recalls the burning bush and the pillar of fire that led Israel. Speech recalls the confusion of Babel being reversed — the gospel will now go to every language and nation.
Peter stood and explained what was happening. He quoted Joel: "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people" Acts 2:17. The "last days" had begun. The new age had arrived. The Spirit was no longer reserved for prophets, priests, and kings. He was being poured out on men and women, young and old, slave and free.
At Pentecost, about three thousand people were added to the church Acts 2:41. But the number is not the miracle. The miracle is the kind of community that formed: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" Acts 2:42. The Spirit created a people marked by devotion, generosity, worship, and joy.
This is the church the Spirit is still building: a community where Jesus is preached, the broken are healed, the poor are cared for, and the nations are reached.
If you are in Christ, Pentecost is not merely a historical event. It is your spiritual birthday. The same Spirit who fell on the disciples has been given to you. The same power that launched the church is meant to launch your life into mission.
