Prophecy, Words, and Impressions
Prophecy is one of the most misunderstood gifts of the Spirit. In the New Testament, prophecy is not primarily about predicting the future. It is about speaking God's truth into a situation for edification, encouragement, and comfort 1 Corinthians 14:3. When the Spirit gives a word to a believer, it is meant to build up the church and point people to Jesus.
What Prophecy Is
Prophecy is the human report of a divine revelation. A person receives an impression, picture, Scripture, or sense from the Spirit and communicates it in love. It may reveal something hidden, confirm God's direction, or bring encouragement in a difficult moment.
Prophecy is not equal to Scripture. Scripture is the inspired, infallible Word of God. Prophecy is a contemporary Spirit-given message that must be tested. Prophecy can be partial, mixed with human interpretation, or simply wrong.
Receiving Impressions
Impressions from the Spirit can come as:
- A sudden thought or phrase
- A mental picture or scene
- A strong sense about a person or situation
- A Scripture verse that seems to leap off the page
- A burden to pray, call, or visit someone
These impressions should be handled with humility. Not every thought is from God. But some are. The key is to learn the difference.
Giving a Word
If you believe the Spirit has given you a word for someone, follow these guidelines:
- 1 Test it against Scripture. Does it align with God's Word and character?
- 2 Check your motives. Are you seeking to bless or to impress?
- 3 Speak with love and humility. Use language like, "I sense the Lord may be saying..." rather than, "Thus says the Lord."
- 4 Let the receiver judge it. The one who receives a prophecy should test it 1 Corinthians 14:29.
- 5 Leave room for error. A prophetic word is not a guarantee. It is an invitation to seek God.
Receiving a Word
When someone gives you a word, do not swallow it blindly. Do not reject it proudly. Test it. Does it align with Scripture? Does it bear witness in your spirit? Does it produce love, peace, and obedience? Does it come through a trustworthy source?
The Goal of Prophecy
The goal is never the prophet. The goal is the glory of Jesus and the building up of His people. "The one who prophesies edifies the church" 1 Corinthians 14:4. Every genuine prophetic ministry will make the church stronger, holier, and more devoted to Christ.
