Module 4: The Spirit's Voice
10 min read
Life is full of decisions. Some are small: what to eat, what to wear, how to spend an hour. Some are large: whom to marry, where to live, what career to pursue, whether to move overseas. The Spirit wants to guide you in all of them, but His guidance operates through a layered process.
Here is a biblical framework for decision-making.
Start with the written Word of God. Does the Bible command or forbid anything related to this decision? If so, that is your guidance. Obedience comes first.
Proverbs says, "Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed" Proverbs 15:22. Seek advice from mature believers who know you and know God's Word. The Spirit often speaks through the church.
What does the Spirit seem to be saying in your spirit? Do you have peace about one option and unrest about another? Let peace act as an umpire, but remember that peace must be tested by Scripture and wisdom.
What is actually possible? What doors are open? What doors are closed? The Spirit guides through providence. Sometimes the right decision is the one that is actually available and aligns with the other layers.
What can you do with a clear conscience? Do not violate your conscience where Scripture has spoken, but also be willing to let your conscience be educated by the Spirit and the Word.
For a major decision, work through each layer in writing. Ask:
When most or all layers align, move forward with confidence. When they conflict, wait. Do not rush a decision when the layers are divided.
Even with the best discernment, you will sometimes make decisions that do not turn out as hoped. That does not mean you failed to hear God. It means you live in a fallen world. God is able to work even through imperfect decisions. The goal is not perfect certainty. The goal is faithful obedience.
