The Battlefields of Life: Mind, Family, Dreams, Finances, Destiny

The human body is not a temporary shell to be escaped. It is a temple of the Holy Spirit 1 Corinthians 6:19, a member of Christ 1 Corinthians 6:15, and an instrument for righteousness Romans 6:13. God created the body good. He will resurrect the body glorified. He cares about the body in this life and the next. Therefore, Satan attacks the body. Sickness, weakness, pain, and disability are tools he uses to discourage, disable, and destroy.
The Bible distinguishes between ordinary illness and Satanic affliction, but the line is not always easy to draw. Job's boils came through Satan's direct action Job 2:7. The woman bound by a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years was healed by Jesus, who said, "Whom Satan hath bound" Luke 13:16. The epileptic boy's condition involved a demonic element Matthew 17:15-18. On the other hand, Timothy had frequent illnesses that Paul treated with practical advice about wine 1 Timothy 5:23. Trophimus was left sick at Miletus 2 Timothy 4:20. Paul had a thorn in the flesh that God chose not to remove 2 Corinthians 12:7-10.
This means the believer must avoid two extremes. One extreme says every sickness is from the devil and can be instantly healed by faith. The other extreme says sickness is only physical and prayer is irrelevant. The biblical position is more nuanced: the body is subject to the fallen world, Satan can attack health, God can heal supernaturally, and God also uses medicine, rest, and wisdom.
Exodus 15:26 calls Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord who heals you. Psalms 103:2-3 says, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." Isaiah 53:5 prophesies of the Messiah, "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed." First Peter 2:24 applies this to believers: "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed."
These texts teach that healing is connected to the atonement. Just as Jesus bore our sins, He bore our sicknesses. This is why Matthew 8:17 says Jesus healed the sick "that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, Himself took our infirmities, and bare our sicknesses." Healing is part of the package of redemption. The believer has a right to expect health as part of the blessings purchased at the cross.
At the same time, healing is not always immediate or automatic in this life. The atonement guarantees ultimate healing — the resurrection body will never get sick — but in the present age, the kingdom is already and not yet. We see in part. We pray for healing, believe for healing, and often receive healing, but we also live in bodies that are still subject to death. Faith does not deny this tension; it presses through it.
How can a believer discern whether a sickness has a Satanic element? Here are some indicators.
Suddenness and severity. Illnesses that come out of nowhere with unusual timing — right before a mission, ministry opportunity, or spiritual breakthrough — may be more than coincidence. Satan times his attacks.
Resistance to natural treatment. When medical care produces no improvement and the condition defies diagnosis, a spiritual element may be involved.
Association with spiritual activity. If the sickness began after occult involvement, a curse, a traumatic sin, or a spiritual attack in another area, it may be connected.
Atmosphere of oppression. Sickness accompanied by fear, despair, nightmares, or a sense of spiritual heaviness may indicate more than a physical cause.
Words of knowledge or prophecy. Sometimes the Holy Spirit reveals that an illness is demonic or rooted in a spiritual issue. This must be confirmed carefully and humbly.
None of these indicators alone proves Satanic causation. They are clues to be prayed over. The first response to any sickness should be prayer, regardless of the cause.
James 5:14-15 gives the church's protocol for sickness: "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him."
The prayer of faith is not a formula. It is a prayer offered in confidence that God hears and heals. The oil symbolizes the Holy Spirit and consecration. The elders represent the authority and care of the church. The sick person is not passive; he calls for help. Healing often comes in community, not isolation.
The prayer of faith does not guarantee healing on demand. God is sovereign. But it does release faith, invite the Spirit's power, and align the sick person with God's will. Sometimes healing is immediate. Sometimes it is gradual. Sometimes it does not come in this life. Faith means trusting God in all three outcomes.
