Chosen by the Father Before Time
Before the Father spoke the first atom into existence, He knew you. Before there was time, He chose you. Before you had done anything good or bad, He set His love upon you. This is the doctrine of election, and it is one of the most comforting truths about the Father.
Paul writes, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will” Ephesians 1:3-5.
Notice the Father’s initiative. He chose. He predestined. He adopted. The action is entirely His. We did not choose Him first. He chose us. We did not earn adoption. He predestined it. The Father’s choice is the fountain from which salvation flows.
This choice is not arbitrary. It is “in accordance with his pleasure and will.” The Father delights to save. He is not reluctantly accepting a few qualified applicants. He is freely, joyfully, sovereignly gathering a family. Election is the Father’s fatherhood at work before the world began.
This truth humbles and stabilizes. It humbles because we did not begin our salvation. We were dead in sin, unable to choose God. The Father reached down. It stabilizes because our salvation does not rest on our willpower. If the Father chose us before time, nothing in time can undo His choice.
Election also produces love. Those who know they were chosen by the Father do not live in arrogance. They live in gratitude. They do not look down on others. They long for others to be gathered too. The doctrine of election, rightly understood, is a missionary doctrine.
Do not let the mystery of election become a distraction from its purpose. The Father chose you to be holy and blameless. He predestined you for adoption. The goal is not merely that you be saved. The goal is that you be His son or daughter, conformed to the image of His Son.
