The most famous verse in the Bible begins with the Father. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16. The Father sent the Son because the Father loved the world.
This sending was not an emergency measure. It was not the Father’s plan B after humanity messed up plan A. The cross was the Father’s plan from before the foundation of the world. “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake” 1 Peter 1:20. The Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world Revelation 13:8.
Why did the Father send the Son?
First, because He loved. The motive of the cross is the Father’s love. “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” 1 John 4:10. Love moves the Father to give what is most precious.
Second, because justice required it. Sin is not a minor mistake. It is an offense against the Father’s holy majesty. A just God cannot simply overlook evil. The cross satisfies justice by placing the penalty on the Son in our place. “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood — to demonstrate his righteousness” Romans 3:25.
Third, because adoption was the goal. The Father did not send the Son merely to forgive sins. He sent the Son to bring many sons and daughters to glory. “Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters” Hebrews 2:11. The cross opens the door to the Father’s household.
Fourth, because His name would be glorified. The Father’s glory is displayed in both judgment and mercy. At the cross, His justice is satisfied and His grace is magnified. “He did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus” Romans 3:26.
The Father sent. The Son came. The Spirit applies. This is the trinitarian shape of redemption. And it all begins with the Father’s love.
