The Father’s Kingdom and Will
The Lord’s Prayer begins with the Father and immediately turns to the Father’s agenda. “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” Matthew 6:9-10. The first three petitions are not about us. They are about the Father’s name, kingdom, and will.
The Father’s kingdom is His active reign. It is not merely a place. It is the exercise of His authority over all things. Where the Father’s kingdom comes, His will is done. Where His will is done, His name is hallowed.
Jesus announced the arrival of the kingdom. “The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” Mark 1:15. The kingdom came in Jesus because Jesus is the King. But the kingdom is not yet fully manifested. We live between the inauguration and the consummation — the “already” and the “not yet.”
Praying “your kingdom come” is a request for the Father’s reign to advance in every area where it is resisted. It is a prayer for salvation, for justice, for healing, for the defeat of evil, and for the transformation of culture. It is a prayer for Jesus to return and establish the Father’s rule in fullness.
“Your will be done” is the surrender of our will to the Father’s. It is the hardest petition because our will often wants something else. We want comfort, success, recognition, and pleasure. The Father wants His glory, our holiness, and the good of His kingdom. Aligning our will with His is the daily work of discipleship.
The Father’s will is not a mystery hidden from us. Much of it is revealed in Scripture: love God, love neighbor, seek justice, walk humbly, forgive, serve, pray, worship, obey. The Father’s specific will for our individual lives is discovered as we walk in the revealed will and listen to His guidance.
To live under the Father’s kingdom and will is to live with purpose. You are not building your own little kingdom. You are advancing the Father’s. You are not chasing your own dreams. You are pursuing His will. This brings both freedom and focus.
