The Father Is Not Like Your Dad

This is one of the most important sentences a wounded believer can hear: God the Father is not like your earthly father. He is not a bigger version of your dad. He is not a projection of your father’s failures or strengths. He is the original. Your earthly father was a shadow; the heavenly Father is the reality.

It is natural to project our human experiences onto God. Children who were loved well may assume God is kind. Children who were neglected may assume God is indifferent. Children who were abused may assume God is cruel. These assumptions feel like faith, but they are often psychology dressed up as theology.

The only way to know the Father is to let Jesus show Him to us. Jesus did not come to confirm our projections. He came to correct them. “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him” John 14:7.

Jesus showed us a Father who is present, not absent. He said, “Surely I am with you always” Matthew 28:20. He showed us a Father who is gentle, not harsh. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” Matthew 11:28. He showed us a Father who is generous, not stingy. “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!” Matthew 7:11.

Jesus showed us a Father who disciplines without destroying. He showed us a Father who listens without mocking. He showed us a Father who forgives without limit. He showed us a Father who runs to meet prodigals while they are still far off.

Your earthly father may have failed you in ways that still hurt. The Father will not fail you. He cannot fail you. His faithfulness is not dependent on your performance. His love is not conditional on your success. His presence is not limited by your feelings.

Let Jesus repaint the picture. Do not settle for a God who looks like your dad. Receive the Father as He truly is.

Memory Verse: Matthew 7:11 — If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Action Step: Write down three characteristics of your earthly father. Beside each, write how the heavenly Father is similar or different.

Exercise: Read Luke 15:11-32 as the portrait of the true Father. Write a paragraph describing how the prodigal’s father corrects your false image of God.
