The Father does not only heal father wounds. He turns the healed into healers. Those who have known the Father’s fatherhood are called to extend it to others. This is the mission of spiritual fathering and mothering.
Isaiah prophesied a day when the Lord would “provide for those who grieve in Zion — to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor” Isaiah 61:3. These oaks would then rebuild, restore, and renew their communities.
Paul modeled this. He called Timothy “my true son in the faith” 1 Timothy 1:2. He called Titus “my true son in our common faith” Titus 1:4. He fathered churches, corrected them, encouraged them, and wept over them. Spiritual fathering is not biological. It is relational, intentional, and sacrificial.
To father the fatherless means several things.
It means being present. Fatherless people do not need more advice. They need presence. They need someone who will show up consistently, listen carefully, and stay long enough to build trust.
It means offering identity. A fatherless person often wonders, “Am I worth anything?” A spiritual father speaks truth: “You are loved by God. You have purpose. You have a future. You are not defined by your past.”
It means modeling character. Spiritual fathers show what mature faith looks like in daily life. They demonstrate prayer, integrity, repentance, generosity, and perseverance.
It means opening doors. A father uses his influence for his children. A spiritual father connects younger believers to opportunities, relationships, and responsibilities that help them grow.
This calling is not limited to men. Women can be spiritual mothers. Older believers can mentor younger ones. The church is called to be a family that fathers the fatherless.
Memory Verse: Isaiah 1:17 — Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.
Action Step: Identify one younger believer or one person without a father figure whom you can invest in this month. Make a plan to spend time with them.
Exercise: Write a job description for a spiritual father or mother. What qualities, commitments, and actions should define the role?
