The Spirit in the Letters and the Revelation

The letters of Paul, Peter, John, James, Jude, and the writer of Hebrews assume that the Holy Spirit is the normal environment of Christian life. The Spirit is not a side topic. He is the air the church breathes.

The Spirit in the Letters

Paul writes constantly about the Spirit. In Romans, the Spirit brings life, adoption, witness, and hope. In 1 Corinthians, the Spirit gives gifts and builds unity. In 2 Corinthians, the Spirit transforms us into Christ's image "with ever-increasing glory" 2 Corinthians 3:18. In Galatians, the Spirit produces fruit and leads us to freedom. In Ephesians, the Spirit seals us, fills us, and empowers unity. In Philippians, we worship by the Spirit. In Colossians, the Spirit renews us.

Every major theme of the Christian life — salvation, assurance, ethics, worship, mission, hope — is Spirit-soaked.

The Spirit and the Church's Health

The letters also warn against grieving the Spirit, quenching the Spirit, and lying to the Spirit. These warnings assume that the church can either cooperate with the Spirit or resist Him. Healthy churches are those that keep in step with the Spirit.

The Spirit in Revelation

At the end of the Bible, the Spirit appears as "the seven spirits" before God's throne Revelation 1:4Revelation 3:1Revelation 4:5Revelation 5:6. This image does not mean there are seven Holy Spirits. It means the Spirit is perfect and complete — seven being the number of fullness. The Spirit searches, knows, speaks, and calls the churches to overcome.

The risen Jesus repeatedly says, "Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches" Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 29Revelation 3:6, 13, 22. The Spirit is the voice of Christ to His people. The last word of the Bible to the church is: listen to the Spirit.

The Story Continues

The Bible's story is not finished. The Spirit who began creation, who empowered the Messiah, who fell at Pentecost, who inspired the apostles, and who speaks to the churches is the same Spirit who will complete the story. He will raise the dead, renew all things, and present the bride to the Lamb.

And until that day, He is with you.
