Module 6: The Spirit's Gifts
10 min read
The Spirit also gives gifts that reveal God's kingdom power in tangible ways. These are often called sign gifts because they point to the reality of God's reign: healing, miracles, faith, and discernment of spirits.
The gift of healing is the Spirit-given ability to pray for the sick and see them recover. It is not a guarantee that every prayer will result in physical healing. God is sovereign over healing. But the gift of healing means that the Spirit works through certain believers in unusual measure to bring physical restoration.
Healing is a sign of the kingdom. Jesus healed as a preview of the resurrection world where there will be no sickness, pain, or death. When the Spirit heals today, He gives us a taste of that future.
Miracles are supernatural interventions that go beyond healing — provision, protection, deliverance, nature miracles, and other acts that display God's power. The gift of miracles enables a believer to be a channel for such displays.
The gift of faith is a Spirit-given confidence that God will act in a specific situation. It is different from saving faith, which every believer has. It is a special assurance that moves mountains, starts ministries, and sustains believers through impossible circumstances.
Discernment of spirits is the ability to distinguish between the Holy Spirit, human spirits, and demonic spirits. It is crucial in counseling, deliverance, prophecy, and spiritual warfare. This gift must be paired with humility, because discernment can easily become judgmentalism.
Sign gifts are real, but they are not toys. They are signs of God's kingdom and tools for serving people. They must never be used for manipulation, fame, or financial gain. The Spirit who gives these gifts also produces the fruit that keeps them holy.
