Discovering and Developing Your Gifts

How do you know what gifts the Spirit has given you? Discovery is a process, not a single test. It involves desire, experience, feedback, opportunity, and growth. This lesson gives a practical pathway for finding and developing your gifts.

Step 1: Desire

Paul says, "eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy" 1 Corinthians 14:1. It is good to want gifts. Desire is often the first indicator of where the Spirit is leading you. What do you long to do for God's people?

Step 2: Experiment

You discover gifts by trying things. Serve in different areas. Teach a small group. Visit the sick. Organize an event. Give generously. Pray for someone. As you serve, patterns emerge.

Step 3: Receive Feedback

Ask mature believers what they see in you. "Do you see any gift developing in me?" "Where have I been helpful?" "What do I seem to do well for the church?" Other people often see our gifts more clearly than we do.

Step 4: Look for Fruit

Where do you see results that exceed your natural ability? Where do people grow, heal, or respond when you serve? Fruit is one of the best confirmations of a gift.

Step 5: Develop Through Practice

Gifts grow with use and training. A person with a teaching gift should study how to teach. A person with a mercy gift should learn to listen well. A person with a leadership gift should grow in character and vision. The Spirit gives the gift; we are responsible to steward it.

Step 6: Stay Humble

Gifts are not badges of honor. They are assignments. The more gifted you are, the more accountable you are. Stay teachable. Stay connected to the body. Stay focused on Jesus.

A Discovery Prayer

"Holy Spirit, show me the gifts You have given me. I do not want to hide them or misuse them. Give me opportunities to serve. Use me to build up Your church. Make me faithful, not famous."
