Christ the Conqueror and Your Authority in Him
Your Position in Christ: Seated Above Satan's Domain

1. You Are Not Fighting for Victory; You Are Fighting from Victory
One of the most common errors in spiritual warfare is the idea that the believer must somehow win a victory that Christ has not yet secured. People pray as though they are begging God to defeat Satan. They fast as though their fasting will force heaven's hand. They rebuke the devil as though the outcome depends on the strength of their voice.
The New Testament does not support this view. Paul writes to the Ephesians, "God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ... and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" Ephesians 2:4-6. The believer is not striving to reach a high place. The believer is already seated there.
This seated position is the foundation of authority. A king rules from his throne. A judge decides from his bench. A general commands from his headquarters. The believer is seated with Christ, far above Satan's domain, and every spiritual battle is fought from that place.
2. The Meaning of Being "In Christ"
The phrase "in Christ" appears dozens of times in the New Testament. It is the most important positional truth in the Christian life. To be in Christ means that everything true of Christ is true of you in a legal, spiritual, and eternal sense. His death was your death. His resurrection was your resurrection. His ascension was your ascension. His seated position is your seated position.
This is why Paul can write, "There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus" Romans 8:1. The condemnation that Satan uses against you was removed because you are in the One who removed it. Your identity is no longer "sinner condemned to die." Your identity is "saint seated with Christ."
Satan knows this, and he hates it. His entire strategy is to get you to live below your position. He wants you to think like a slave, feel like a victim, and act like a defeated person. But you are not a slave. You are a son. You are not a victim. You are a victor. You are not defeated. You are seated with the Conqueror.
3. Far Above Every Power
Ephesians 1:20-21 says that Christ is seated "far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named." Ephesians 2:6 says you are seated with Him. This means that in your true, spiritual position, every demonic power is beneath your feet.
This is not arrogance. It is not you exalting yourself. It is Christ exalting you by grace. You did not climb to this position. You were raised to it. You did not earn it. You received it as a gift. Therefore, when you exercise spiritual authority, you are not acting as though you are greater than angels in yourself. You are acting from the authority of the One with whom you are seated.
A policeman carries authority not because he is stronger than every criminal, but because he represents the government. A believer carries authority not because he is personally more powerful than demons, but because he represents Christ. The authority is delegated. The position is real.
4. Reckoning Yourself Dead to Sin and Alive to God
Romans 6:11 commands, "Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord." The word "reckon" means to count as true, to account it so, to consider it a fact. You are not pretending. You are agreeing with what God has already made true.
This reckoning is essential in warfare. Satan attacks through temptation. He whispers, "You are still a slave to this. You cannot stop. You will fall again." The believer answers, "I am dead to sin and alive to God. My old man was crucified with Christ. The body of sin has been destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin" Romans 6:6.
The feeling may not match immediately. The habit may still pull. The memory of failure may still sting. But the truth does not depend on feeling. It depends on the cross. The more you reckon yourself dead to sin, the more your experience begins to catch up with your position.
5. The Armor of God: Standing, Not Striving
Ephesians 6:10-18 describes the armor of God. The purpose of the armor is not to help you attack Satan directly in your own strength. The purpose is to enable you to "be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" and to "withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand" Ephesians 6:11, 13. The armor is for standing.
Standing is the posture of someone who is already in a secure position. A soldier does not stand because he is uncertain of the ground. He stands because the ground beneath him is solid. The believer stands because he is seated with Christ. Every piece of the armor — truth, righteousness, the gospel of peace, faith, salvation, the Word, and prayer — is simply the equipment needed to maintain your position under attack.
When Satan tempts you, stand in truth. When he accuses you, stand in righteousness. When he frightens you, stand in faith. When he lies to you, stand in the Word. The battle is not about moving. It is about refusing to be moved.
