Christ the Conqueror and Your Authority in Him

Satan's attacks almost always begin with identity. In the garden, his first words were not, "Disobey God." His first words were, "Yea, hath God said...?" Genesis 3:1. He wanted Eve to question what God had said about her, about the garden, and about the forbidden tree. Once she doubted God's word, disobedience followed naturally.
In the wilderness, Satan opened each temptation with, "If thou be the Son of God" Matthew 4:3, 6. He attacked Jesus' identity directly. If he could get Jesus to doubt who He was, the rest of the temptation would work. But Jesus answered from Scripture, and the attack failed.
The same pattern continues today. The devil cannot change who you are in Christ, but he can try to deceive you about who you are. He whispers lies about your past, your failures, your worth, your calling, your future, and your acceptance before God. If you believe the lie, you will act like the lie. This is identity theft in the spiritual realm.
The Bible is filled with statements about the believer's identity. These are not motivational slogans. They are facts secured by the work of Christ. When you believe them and confess them, your life begins to align with the truth.
You are a child of God. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name" John 1:12. You are not an orphan, a stranger, or a slave. You are God's son or daughter, and He is your Father.
You are forgiven. "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace" Ephesians 1:7. Your sins are not merely overlooked. They are washed away by the blood of Jesus.
You are righteous. "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him" 2 Corinthians 5:21. You have been given the very righteousness of God as a gift.
You are holy. "But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" 1 Peter 2:9. You are set apart for God.
You are accepted. "To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved" Ephesians 1:6. You are not tolerated. You are accepted in Christ.
You are seated with Christ. "Hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" Ephesians 2:6. You occupy a position of authority.
You are more than a conqueror. "Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us" Romans 8:37. Victory is your identity, not merely your hope.
You are a temple of the Holy Spirit. "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" 1 Corinthians 3:16. God lives in you.
Satan offers a counterfeit identity for every truth God speaks. Where God says you are forgiven, Satan says you are condemned. Where God says you are righteous, Satan says you are filthy. Where God says you are accepted, Satan says you are rejected. Where God says you are a conqueror, Satan says you are a failure. Where God says you are a child of God, Satan says you are a slave to your past.
These lies are often mixed with facts. You did fail. You did sin. You were rejected. You did experience loss. Satan does not need to invent a completely false story. He only needs to twist the meaning of a true story. The fact becomes a weapon when the conclusion is wrong.
The believer must learn to separate the fact from the conclusion. Yes, you sinned. No, that sin does not define you anymore. Yes, you failed. No, you are not a failure. Yes, you were hurt. No, you are not condemned to repeat the past. The blood of Jesus speaks a better word than every accusation.
Romans 12:2 commands, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." The battle for identity is won or lost in the mind. If your thoughts conform to the world's lies, your life will conform to the world's patterns. If your mind is renewed by the Word, your life will be transformed.
Paul describes this renewal in Colossians 3:1-3: "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God." Setting your affection means fixing your mind, your emotions, and your desires on heavenly realities.
The way to renew your mind is to fill it with the truth of God's Word. You cannot think your way out of a lie. You must replace the lie with truth. When Satan says you are condemned, quote Romans 8:1. When he says you are weak, quote Philippians 4:13. When he says you are abandoned, quote Hebrews 13:5. The truth displaces the lie the way light displaces darkness.
