Module 7: The Spirit's Mission
9 min read
The Holy Spirit is not only concerned with personal salvation. He is concerned with the whole world — including the poor, the oppressed, the orphan, the widow, the immigrant, and the victim. The Spirit who empowers mission also empowers compassion and justice.
When Jesus read from Isaiah in the synagogue, He highlighted the Spirit's mission: "The Spirit of the Lord is on me... He has sent me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free" Luke 4:18.
The gospel is good news to the poor. It is freedom for the captive. It is sight for the blind. It is justice for the oppressed. Any gospel that ignores these realities is incomplete.
Compassion is not pity. Pity feels bad from a distance. Compassion draws near and acts. The Spirit produces compassion that moves the church toward the hurting. This looks like feeding the hungry, visiting the prisoner, housing the homeless, comforting the grieving, and defending the vulnerable.
Justice means setting things right. It means confronting systems and structures that oppress people made in God's image. The Spirit gives wisdom, courage, and persistence to those who work for justice.
Justice is not separate from evangelism. It is part of the same mission. A church that preaches salvation but ignores injustice has not fully understood the Spirit's work.
You cannot solve every problem in the world. But you can do something. The Spirit will show you where to start. It may be giving, volunteering, advocating, mentoring, or simply showing up for a neighbor in need.
This week, ask the Spirit to open your eyes to one person or cause He wants you to engage.
