Module 7: The Spirit's Mission
9 min read
Pentecost was a miracle of languages. The disciples spoke in tongues, and people from many nations heard the gospel in their own languages. The Spirit was making a statement: the gospel is for every people, every culture, and every language.
At Babel, human pride led to the confusion of languages and the scattering of nations. At Pentecost, the Spirit reversed the curse for the sake of the gospel. People who could not understand each other suddenly heard the same message: the wonders of God.
This is the Spirit's pattern. He builds bridges where there were walls. He creates unity across difference. He gathers a family from every tribe and tongue.
Today, the fastest-growing churches are often in the Global South — Africa, Asia, Latin America. The Spirit is moving powerfully among people who were once considered marginal. The center of Christianity is shifting, and the Spirit is leading the way.
This means that Western Christians no longer have a monopoly on the Spirit's work. We have much to learn from believers in other cultures. The global church is the family of the Spirit, and every part has something to offer.
The Spirit does not erase culture. He redeems it. Every language can worship. Every culture can express the gospel in its own forms. Missions that demand people become like the missionaries miss the Spirit's genius.
As you engage with people from other cultures, bring humility. Listen. Learn. Let the Spirit show you how the gospel takes root in different soil.
Even if you never travel overseas, you are connected to the global church. You can pray for persecuted believers, support missionaries, welcome immigrants, and learn from Christians around the world.
The Spirit is building one church from every nation. You are part of it.
