Mission is not easy. The same Spirit who empowers also leads believers into hardship. Jesus warned His disciples that they would be persecuted. Paul wrote that "everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted" 2 Timothy 3:12. The Spirit does not remove suffering. He sustains us in it.
The Spirit helps us in our weakness. "We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans" Romans 8:26. When we do not know what to say, the Spirit prays for us. When we do not know how to endure, the Spirit gives strength.
The Spirit also produces hope. "Hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us" Romans 5:5. In suffering, the Spirit reminds us that the story is not over.
Jesus told His disciples, "You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved" Matthew 10:22. Perseverance is not a one-time decision. It is a lifelong walk in the Spirit.
The Spirit gives perseverance by:
Paul declares that "our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" Romans 8:18. The Spirit is the firstfruits of that glory. He is the guarantee that one day all suffering will end and all things will be made new.
This hope is not escapism. It is fuel for endurance. Because the future is secure, we can serve faithfully today.
